Moving Tips
How to Start Packing for Your Household Move
With the right plan you can eliminate the anxiety and make moving easier. Here are a few tips to consider!
Decide what will move with you and what will stay behind.
Label all boxes. Its best to label all packing boxes at the top and sides of boxes with contents, the location of contents in your house, and if there are any special instructions, such as “fragile” or “open first.” Movers will put the boxes in the correct rooms.
Use wardrobe boxes to pack your closets, that easier. Clothes in drawers can be packed in suitcases or bags.
Use small boxes for books, never over pack as boxes will get heavy.
Keep box weight to a minimum.
For furniture keep all parts together with the item itself. Store screws, bolts, and other small pieces into a self-locking plastic bag (sandwich bag/freezer bag) then taped to the furniture itself.
Moving Supplies You'll Need
If you are planning to pack all your household items by yourself, you need to acquire all the required moving supplies to have a successful move.
See below a few essential moving supplies you need when you are moving.
Cardboard Boxes
Get a variety of sizes. Stocking up on mostly small and medium size boxes is recommended. You will need a few large boxes for lightweight and/or bulky items, wardrobe boxes for your closets and mirror/picture boxes for fragile mirrors and artwork.
Use ink free newsprint paper to wrap and protect everything, like kitchenware, glasses small electronics etc. It can also be used to fill in gaps and empty spaces between the box and items so that your belongings do not shift while in transit.
Packing Tape
Invest in the durable high-quality tape. It can also be used to fill in gaps and empty spaces between the box and items so that your belongings don’t shift while in transit.
Bubble Wrap for Cushioning
This can also be used to fill in gaps and empty spaces between the box and items so that your things do not shift while in transit. It is ideal for delicate items, such as antiques, china, porcelain, crystal, etc, as they will need bubble cushioning to properly protect them.
Scissors or Box Cutter
For cutting packing paper and bubble cushioning to unpacking and opening boxes, this will come in handy.
Labels and Sharpie Marker
It is important to label all boxes when moving to a new home. Otherwise, you are going to lose your items. Also, this makes it very easy for movers to know which room to place which box.
